Borussia Dortmund’s defense has been pretty weak this season conceding 33 goals in 27 games. Some of the players signed during last summer didn’t reach their maximum potential so a couple of replacements might come in handy.

Borussia Dortmund seems to be on the lookout for a couple of fullbacks this summer to upgrade the flanks. Currently, our fullbacks are both over 30-years-old (Piszczek and Schmelzer) and their successors haven’t shown much improvement (Toljan and Durm). Because of this, Dortmund has their eyes set on two solid fullbacks, Jonas Hector and Mitchell Weiser. Both of them are experienced fullbacks that are full-time starters in their clubs and will surely make an instant impact in Dortmund. Now, let’s learn a bit about these two guys.

Who is Mitchell Weiser?

Mitchell Weiser was born on the 21st of April of 1994 in the city of Troisdorf. As a youngster, he joined Fc Koln’s academy and climbed up the ranks all the way to the first team in 2012. He only managed to play in 1 game for the senior team before being transferred to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for $720k that same summer. Once he arrived at Bayern, he had to wait until 2014, including a loan spell in FC Kaiserslautern, for his debut with the Bavarian giants. Weiser’s time at Bayern was mostly composed of playing during garbage time and starts once the season was already won. Mitchell realized that he wasn’t near reaching his full potential so he quickly transferred to Hertha BSC on 2015 after his contract with Bayern ran out. As soon as he joined Hertha he has been a full-time starter and has already played in 82 games and scoring 8 goals and 16 assists.

Should Borussia Dortmund buy him?

I don’t believe that Weiser should be an important target for Borussia Dortmund. Currently, Dortmund has 3 options in the right back position being Piszczek, Toljan, and Durm. Piszczek’s age is starting to show, he is slow and is easily getting overwhelmed, Toljan hasn’t been the young talent we all wanted him to become, and Durm just can’t seem to remain healthy. Considering all of that one would believe that Weiser is a no-brainer, but we are still missing a fourth option that is currently on loan at TSG Hoffenheim, Felix Passlack. The 19-year-old still has potential to replace Lukasz Piszczek in the near future, we just can’t leave our academy talent undeveloped. Weiser’s price should be around $13 million because of his release clause which can be considered a steal. I wouldn’t buy him unless we actually do some cleaning on the right back position because if we don’t we will have to rotate 4 players and that could be a nightmare.

Who is Jonas Hector?

Jonas Hector is a 27-year-old left back that was born in Saarbrücken in 1990. He began his career at his hometown club SV Auersmacher where he scaled up the ranks making his first-team debut in 2009. Just a couple of months after that he transferred to FC Köln on a free transfer, but he had to wait 2 years until his senior team debut at just 21-years-old. Since then Hector has cemented himself as a crucial starter for FC Köln and has already played in 183 games for them. His consistency in the field was noted by German strategist Joachim Löw who awarded him with a national team cap for the first time in 2014. Since then he is also considered the best German left back there currently is.

Should Dortmund buy him?

Jonas Hector is the best left back in Germany at the moment. Getting him on Dortmund’s roster will be an upgrade to Marcel Schmelzer and could even succed Schmelzer in the near future. If we manage to get a fair price for him, anything below $30 million, we should give him a shot.
