Borussia Dortmund have announced that Christian Pulisic will leave the club in the summer after a deal worth 64 million euros was agreed with Chelsea.
Pulisic will spend the rest of the 2018-19 season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, before moving to England in the summer. At 64 million euros, Pulisic becomes the club’s second most expensive departure after Ousmane Dembele, who joined Barcelona for 115 million euros in 2017.
Pulisic moved to Borussia Dortmund in February 2015, aged just 16, and did not take long to make his mark for the youth team. He was quickly called up to train with the senior squad, and made his competitive debut for the first team in January 2016. He continued his rise up the ranks and become a regular starter after Ousmane Dembele’s departure at the start of last season.
However, the rise of Jadon Sancho has seen him reduced to a bit part role this season, and Pulisic has been restricted to just four league starts this season.
Pulisic’s contract with Borussia Dortmund was set to expire at the end of next season. And after refusing to extend his contract, the 20 year old has finally got his move to the Premier League. Liverpool and Bayern Munich were credited with an interest in Pulisic, but Chelsea were always the front runners.
Borussia Dortmund were resigned to losing Pulisic and will feel that getting 64 million euros for him is great business for the club. Getting to keep the winger until the end of the season is also a big boost for Borussia Dortmund, as transfer fees are always higher in the January transfer window and signing a replacement would have cost the club a fortune.
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said, “It was always Christian’s dream to play in the Premier League. That certainly has to do with his American background, and as a result we were unable to extend his contract. Against this background, we have decided to accept an extremely lucrative bid by Chelsea, given the low contract maturity.”
“Christian Pulisic is a character perfect player. I am sure that in the coming months he will do everything in his power to bring his high quality to the team and to achieve his sporting goals with his team-mates Borussia Dortmund.”
