Recent reports out of Germany suggest that VfB Stuttgart is looking to loan Maximilian Philipp for the remainder of the season.
Kicker recently reported Stuttgart’s interest in Maximilian Philipp, with a loan option seemingly more likely. There have also been rumors of Hannover and Besiktas both showing interest in the Dortmund forward. However, Borussia Dortmund are not willing to send him out on loan, but will listen to offers above 20 million euros, according to the same report.
With playing time scarce recently for Philipp, it is not surprising to see teams linked with a move for him given his past success in the Bundesliga. Although the 2017/2018 season saw Philipp miss significant time through injury, he still managed to score 9 goals in 20 games, solid production for a winger.
Philipp started the season as Borussia Dortmund’s lead striker but he failed to make much of an impact. And the arrival of Paco Alcacer saw him get relegated to the bench.
Mario Gotze is now set as the second striker sharing time with Alcacer, it has left Philipp with very little opportunity up front. If staying with Borussia Dortmund beyond this January it would be beneficial to give Philipp opportunities on the wing or even in the number ten role when resting Reus. Both of these positions suit his style of play more than as an out and out striker.
Maximilian Philipp’s agent was quoted saying “The whole thing is just a rumor, there’s nothing more we can say about it” to Stuttgarter Nachrichten today.
With the current squad available to Lucien Favre, combined with the lack of play time for Philipp, a loan for the remainder of the season may be best for all parties. Playing week in, week out for the next six months could help Philipp find his form and regain his confidence once again. Ideally though, he remains with Borussia Dortmund and makes the most of the opportunities he gets in the second half of the season.
