Borussia Dortmund have sold Christian Pulisic to Chelsea for 64 million euros, and the Black and Yellows could not have asked for a better deal for the 20 year old.
It was common knowledge in August that Pulisic’s time in Borussia Dortmund would be coming to an abrupt end either in January or next summer. The American international had already decided that he wasn’t going to extend his contract with the club. And Der BVB had no choice but to sell the player who was once dubbed as the next Marco Reus.
But even then they showed no panic and made sure that Pulisic was only sold on their terms. They took control of the situation and got 64 million euros for a player who is still miles away from realizing his potential.
Don’t get me wrong, Pulisic still has all the ingredients to become a star at Chelsea. He has shown on several occasions at Borussia Dortmund just how good he can be. Pulisic has the potential to set the Premier League alight and could well be worth the money Chelsea have splashed on him. However, when you look at his performances over the last 18 months, you will see Pulisic is hardly an indispensable member of the squad.
Of course, almost every young player hits rough patches and a change of scenery could well do Pulisic a whole lot of good. He has always wanted to play in the Premier League, and deserves credit for handling the whole situation with great professionalism, unlike some of the others who have left the club in recent years.
But the truth is that Pulisic is easily replaceable and keeping him at the club for six more months gives Borussia Dortmund plenty of time to find his perfect replacement. They are now under zero pressure and won’t have to overpay as teams usually do in the January transfer window.
Borussia Dortmund sold Ousmane Dembele, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Sokratis for a combined fee of 190 million euros, used it to completely overhaul their squad, and they are now currently sitting pretty at the top of the Bundesliga table. So imagine what they could do with the big money they have received for someone who isn’t even a regular starter.
Michael Zorc described Chelsea’s offer for Pulisic as an “extraordinary lucrative bid”. And accepting it was simply a no brainer for Borussia Dortmund. Borussia Dortmund have now become renowned for their ability to make shrewd signings to replace players who leave on big money fees. And don’t be surprised if Michael Zorc and co. pull off another transfer masterstroke in the summer to replace Pulisic.
