Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur lock horns in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 and here we select a combined XI of the two sides.
There will be no shortage of talent when Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur face off in Europe’s premier club competition and we will be in for quite a gripping battle over the two legs. Borussia Dortmund topped their Champions League group and hold a five point cushion at the top of the Bundesliga table. While Tottenham Hotspur squeezed through to the knockout round of the Champions League, and are currently the outsiders in the Premier League title race.
Borussia Dortmund just edge Tottenham out with more players in this lineup. However there are quite a few players on both sides who could easily get the nod over the ones in this list. Here we round up the best combined XI of both sides in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Goalkeeper: Roman Burki
This one is a toss up between Roman Burki and Hugo Lloris. The Frenchman is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but his decision making has cost Tottenham quite a few times this season, most notably against Barcelona and PSV in the UCL group stage this season.
Burki on the other hand has hardly made any errors this season. Instead, he has been one of Borussia Dortmund’s standout players, often making saves that he simply had no right to. When Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham faced each other last season, Burki did not have the best of games. But this season, he has been a wall in between the sticks and teams have found it incredibly hard to find the net with him in goal.
Borussia Dortmund conceded just two goals in the group stage, and Burki was one of the major reasons behind their superb defensive record. Not a lot of people will have Burki ahead of Lloris in their lists, but based on this season’s form, I believe he just edges out Lloris.
