Transfer to Borussia Dortmund

Maximilian Philipp arrived at Borussia Dortmund for 18 million euros before the start of the 2017/18 season after an impressive campaign with SC Freiburg. Some questioned whether he was worth the transfer fee when he was signed, but Philipp quickly started to prove his doubters wrong by scoring a brace in his fourth and then his sixth game for the club.

He continued to show why he had drawn comparisons with Marco Reus with his impressive performers from the left wing over the course of the first half of the season. Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury against Bayer Leverkusen in December 2017 and was ruled out for almost three months.

Upon his return in March, Philipp quickly got back into the side and managed to find the net three times before the end of the season, to finish as the club’s leading goalscorer in the Bundesliga.

Despite his injury, Philipp still managed to have a good season with nine goals and five assists to his name, a solid return in his first campaign with Borussia Dortmund.
