Second season woes

Many expected Philipp to kick on and play an even more important role in his second season at Borussia Dortmund. The arrival of Lucien Favre and the absence of a natural striker prompted suggestions that Philipp could be used as a false nine. Michael Zorc even said publicly that he felt that Philipp was more than capable of playing as a lone striker.

And that is exactly where the 25 year old started the season. Philipp started as the number nine in all but one of Borussia Dortmund’s first seven league games of the season but wasn’t able to find the net or make much of an impact.

That prompted the club to sign Paco Alcacer from Barcelona on an initial loan deal. Philipp soon lost his spot to the Spaniard, and managed to get only three league starts after October. Philipp also struggled with injuries, and saw Mario Gotze replace him as the second choice striker in the second half of the campaign.

He finished the season with just two goals and three assists in 23 appearances, not an impressive return compared to his first season.
