Mats Hummels linked with shock move to Borussia Dortmund

Reports in Germany claim that Borussia Dortmund are interested in bringing Bayern Munich centre back Mats Hummels back to the club.

According to BILD, Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac is open to selling Mats Hummels this summer and talks have already taken place between the two clubs. Borussia Dortmund are said to be keen on signing the former Germany international and he could be available for 15-20 million euros.

Meanwhile, Sky Germany claim that negotiations between Bayern and Borussia Dortmund for the transfer of Hummels are at an advanced stage, although no agreement has been reached between the two parties yet. They also claim that a transfer fee is likely to be in the range of 30 million euros.

Hummels, who spent eight years at Borussia Dortmund before returning to Bayern Munich in 2016, has a contract with the Bavarians until 2021. But following the arrivals of Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez, he will no longer be a guaranteed starter next season.

The Black and Yellows are looking to sign an experienced centre back this summer as they look to add some stability and leadership to the backline. There are certainly no doubts about Hummels’ experience and leadership qualities, or his ability to play at the highest level. But the question remains whether the Borussia Dortmund supporters will be happy to see him return, three years after his acrimonious departure.

Another question is whether Hummels would be open to returning to the Westfalenstadion. While the opportunity to lead Borussia Dortmund’s young squad to the Bundesliga title would certainly be a tempting one for the 30 year old, he will almost certainly have to take a pay cut if he does decide to move.

It will be interesting to see if/how this story develops in the coming weeks. But with Borussia Dortmund being linked with so many experienced centre backs, it is looking quite likely that we will see one arrive this summer.
