Borussia Dortmund enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 win over Serie A side Udinese in a match affected by torrential rain in the second half.
Lucien Favre named a strong line-up for his side’s game against Udinese in Austria. Thorgan Hazard, Julian Brandt, Jadon Sancho and Mario Götze all started in a four pronged attack, while Achraf Hakimi made his return after his involvement in the African Cup of Nations.
And it took Hazard just five minutes to open the scoring as he latched on to a poor clearance, before finishing past the goalkeeper. However, the Belgian international had to go off with an injury just eight minutes later, with Gio Reyna coming on his place.
Borussia Dortmund doubled their advantage in the 19th minute when Mario Götze slotted home from the penalty spot after Achraf Hakimi was brought down inside the box.
A poor Udinese pass was capitalized on by Julian Weigl, who also ended the move with an excellent low finish past the goalkeeper. Julian Brandt then got on the scoresheet on the stroke of half time to cap off an impressive first half by Borussia Dortmund.
Lucien Favre made 11 changes at half time, and rain started to pour in at the start of the second half, making things difficult for both sides. Jacob Bruun Larsen and Marco Reus came close to scoring for the Black and Yellows, but it was Udinese who got the next goal thanks to Rolando Mandragora’s free-kick from 20 yards out.
The heavy rain resulted in a number of mis-timed sliding tackles, a few injury scares and a brawl, but luckily none of the players suffered any injuries. The weather was so bad that after 83 minutes, the referee decided to end the game prematurely.
In the end, it was a good run-out for the Borussia Dortmund players, who made it four wins out of four in pre-season. Next up for them is a game against Swiss side St. Gallen at the AFG Arena in Switzerland on July 30, before they take on Bayern Munich for the DFL-Supercup on August 03.
