Five Borussia Dortmund signings that proved to be bargain buys

Borussia Dortmund have had a lot of success recently when it comes to the transfer window. The BVB bosses have done some exceptional business over the last decade or so, paying minimal fees for future stars.

Borussia Dortmund’s scouts know a valuable player when they see one and the Black and Yellows are renowned for making shrewd signings. Here we take a look at five bargain buys Dortmund were able to sign, bringing in players for low fees who turned into important players in their squads.

The 34 year old right back has played at Borussia Dortmund for the past nine seasons and has been one of the best right backs in the world at points throughout his career. Piszczek joined Dortmund from Hertha Berlin at the age of 25 on a free transfer. While at Hertha, Piszczek struggled to nail down a spot as he played multiple positions and also struggled with fitness.

When Klopp brought in the relatively unknown Polish international, he switched him to right back almost right away. Piszczek was a big part of the Dortmund squad that won back to back Bundesliga titles under Jurgen Klopp. He played a vital role in both those seasons, scoring 4 goals and providing 18 assists through those two seasons.

Thus far, he has played 324 matches for the Black and Yellows scoring 17 goals and providing 60 assists. All the while remaining a solid and reliable defender. Even with the arrival of Achraf Hakimi and injuries, Piszczek played in 26 matches last season. Still young at heart and not thinking about retirement just yet, expect Piszczek to enjoy another full season at Borussia Dortmund.
