Lucien Favre explains why Jadon Sancho was benched for Borussia Dortmund’s draw against Freiburg

Lucien Favre has given his reasons for not starting Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund’s 2-2 draw against SC Freiburg on Saturday.

Jadon Sancho has been ever-present for Borussia Dortmund so far this season, But he was rather surprisingly left out of the starting line up for Saturday’s clash against SC Freiburg. Now head coach Lucien Favre has explained why the young Englishman started on the bench, claiming that he was ‘dead’ and needed some rest after a busy start to the season.

Speaking at the press conference following the game, Favre said (H/T: Goal):

“He was dead and he needed a break because he had played all the games so far. We had an English week, and he played everything. He is 19 years old and it is completely normal. He knows he’s a bit tired and needs a little break.”

“It’s not easy to do the English weeks. It’s part of it, it’s our job.”

Sancho eventually did come on at the hour mark, replacing fellow winger Thorgan Hazard. He made an instant impact on the game, finding Achraf Hakimi, who forced an own goal to restore Borussia Dortmund’s lead.

A late own goal from Manuel Akanji saw the Black and Yellows drop points at the death once again. And Lucien Favre has said that he was disappointed with his team’s lack of aggressiveness in the second half.

“You don’t get many chances to score. We’ve made mistakes in pressing, in conquering the ball. There was no aggressiveness. They counter and we lose the ball unnecessarily. If we can’t intervene, we come back, if we can intervene, we have to go into the duel. Then we have to be tough for 90 or 95 minutes.”

“But there were also tactical mistakes. And up front, the last 35 metres we have to say clearly, we did not play well here in the second half.

Borussia Dortmund are currently seventh in the Bundesliga standings, but could end the weekend as low as ninth if both Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt win their games on Sunday. Their next game following the international break will see them take on Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Westfalenstadion.
