Portuguese giants SL Benfica are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl for 20 million euros.
Julian Weigl has long been linked with a move away from Borussia Dortmund, with Paris St. Germain and Barcelona showing heavy interest in his signature. Weigl’s agent Samy Wagner revealed earlier this month that SL Benfica were keen on signing the 24 year old.
And if reports in Portugal are to be believed, the Primeira Liga champions seem to have got their man. According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, Benfica have struck a deal with Borussia Dortmund to sign Julian Weigl for 20 million euros. They add that the transfer fee will be paid in instalments, and the midfielder will seal a move to the Lisbon-based club in the coming days.
A Bola say that Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira met with the BVB bosses in recent days, and the transfer is imminent. While Record claim that negotiations for the transfer of Weigl have reached an advanced stage in recent hours, and the deal could be closed in the coming days.
WAZ have confirmed the story, saying that the transfer could happen very quickly. They add that although the fee is still being negotiated, it will be in the region of 15 and 20 million euros.
Weigl’s contract with Borussia Dortmund expires at the end of next season, and his future has been in doubt for some time now. Although he ended the first half of the season in the starting XI, Weigl remains behind Axel Witsel in the pecking order at the Westfalenstadion.
Weigl’s potential departure would leave Borussia Dortmund light in defensive midfield. Tobias Raschl could be promoted to the first team, or we could see a new signing come in as back-up to Axel Witsel.
