Borussia Dortmund: England FA tracking Gio Reyna

The England Football Association is monitoring the progress of Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Gio Reyna, reports in England say.

Gio Reyna joined Borussia Dortmund this past summer, and has quickly become part of the first team. He made his senior debut for the Black and Yellows in January, and has come off the bench in each of Dortmund’s last eight games.

Reyna scored his first goal for the club earlier this month, a stunning strike from the edge of the box in the DFB Pokal. The 17 year old also assisted Erling Haaland’s winner in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie against Paris St. Germain.

And his performances have already attracted plenty of interest and attention. According to the Athletic’s David Ornstein, the English FA is taking steps to potentially get Reyna to play for the Three Lions in the future.

Reyna was born in Durham, England in 2002 when his father was playing for Sunderland. He has represented the United States at the U15, U16 and U17 levels. His performances for Borussia Dortmund have led to calls to include him in the USMNT senior squad for next month’s internationals.

The attacking midfielder is also eligible to play for Argentina and Portugal via his grandparents, and that could lead to a four way battle for his services in the coming years.

Ornstein says that England’s interest in still in the observation and data gathering stage, but if he continues to impress, they could make him a concrete target. Reyna’s parents both represented the United States in their careers.
