Analysing Borussia Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League group stage opponents

Club Brugge KV
Club Brugge are undoubtedly the minnows of the group, but they possess enough quality in their ranks to hurt the other three teams. After winning the Jupiler Pro League last season, the Belgian giants were able to keep hold of star players Krépin Diatta and Emmanuel Dennis despite interest from a number of clubs around Europe. The former has made an impressive start to the new season, scoring four goals in seven games so far.
Their top scorer though, is Hans Vanaken, who has five goals and three assists to his name. The attacking midfielder is considered to be the best player in the Belgian league, and his performances will certainly be crucial to Club Brugge’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout rounds. Highly rated 18 year old striker Youssouph Badji has been their breakout star of their season so far, and has scored twice.
Club Brugge also have a solid defence, and conceded just 14 league goals last season. Their record in the Champions League wasn’t as impressive, although they did manage to earn a 2-2 draw away to Real Madrid, and finished third in their group which also contained Paris St. Germain. A 5-0 defeat to Manchester United then saw them get knocked out in the Europa League round of 32, despite a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
Head coach Philippe Clement likes to line his team up in various different systems, depending on the opponent. Their adaptability and versatility is what makes them so strong. And while few expect them to qualify for the knockout rounds, beating Club Brugge will not be an easy task, as Borussia Dortmund found out just two seasons ago.
