Expected Borussia Dortmund starting XI vs Hoffenheim: Jadon Sancho to return?
By Tom Rodgers
Back Three: Lukasz Piszczek, Mats Hummels, Emre Can
Lukasz Piszczek will replace Manuel Akanji on the right side of the Borussia Dortmund back three after the latter tested positive for COVID-19 while on international duty. Akanji’s quarantine ends tomorrow, and his status for next week’s Champions League clash against Lazio is also in question. Piszczek continues to be one of Dortmund’s most reliable player, and will be aiming to impress as he makes his first start of the new season.
Starting in the middle of the back three will be Borussia Dortmund’s only fit senior specialist defender. Hummels will have had a full rest during the break and should be raring to go ahead of the busy schedule. His excellent passing alongside his ability in defence make him the perfect fit to sit in the middle of the back three and lead the back-line.
Emre Can will likely shift to the left of the back three to accomodate Piszczek. The German international scored against Freiburg two weeks ago, and has enjoyed a solid start to the season.
