Borussia Dortmund were made to pay for poor team selection, a lack of urgency and vital missed chances, as they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to FC Köln.

Borussia Dortmund started well and could have scored inside the first ten minutes of the game. But Jadon Sancho struck the crossbar after some good play by Marco Reus. Köln then took the lead from a corner, with Dortmund loanee Marius Wolf providing the flick-on for Ellyes Skhiri to score.

The Black and Yellows were unable to break down the Köln defence for large parts of the game, and the Billy Goats doubled their lead in the second half through what looked like a repeat of the first goal. Wolf once again provided the flick-on header from a Köln corner, leaving Ellyes Skhiri with a simple tap-in to make it 2-0.

Thorgan Hazard pulled a goal back after some good work by fellow substitutes Gio Reyna and Youssoufa Moukoko. But Borussia Dortmund weren’t able to find an equaliser late on, with Erling Haaland missing a glorious chance in the final seconds of the game.

Here are our player ratings for the Borussia Dortmund players from the game.

Roman Bürki (4.5/10)

Bürki was partly at fault for the second goal as he couldn’t get enough on Wolf’s initial header, leaving Ellyes Skhiri with a simple finish. He also had a horrible mix up with Akanji in the first half, but luckily for him, Thomas Meunier cleared the ball on that occasion.
