Mainz 05 stunned Borussia Dortmund when the two sides met in June, earning a shock 2-0 win at the Westfalenstadion. Goals from Jonathan Burkardt and Jean-Philippe Mateta gave Mainz a priceless win in their quest to avoid relegation.
It was a humbling defeat for Borussia Dortmund, who ended last season with a string of poor performances and results, especially at home. And they will no doubt be aiming to get a measure of revenge this time around.
Borussia Dortmund did earn a dominant 4-0 win over Mainz in the reverse fixture, with Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard and Nico Schulz all finding the net on that ocassion.
