The last competitive meeting these two sides was back in May 2020, when Borussia Dortmund earned a 6-1 win over SC Paderborn courtesy of a second-half goal blitz. After a goalless first half, the Black and Yellows ran riot in the second to cruise to a comprehensive win.

Jadon Sancho scored the first hat-trick of his professional career to lead the charge, while Thorgan Hazard, Marcel Schmelzer and Achraf Hakimi also got on the score-sheet to help Borussia Dortmund claim a massive win over the relegation threatened Paderborn.

The reverse fixture was anything but straight-forward though, as Paderborn took a shock 3-0 lead in the first half at the Westfalenstadion. Dortmund managed to come from behind and rescue a 3-3 draw, with Marco Reus scoring a 92nd minute equaliser.
