Defenders: Felix Passlack, Manuel Akanji, Antonios Papadopoulos, Nico Schulz

With so many defenders ruled out ahead of the game, Borussia Dortmund’s back four pretty much picks itself. Felix Passlack will fill in for Thomas Meunier at right-back. The 23 year old put in some encouraging performances during pre-season. And if he manages to impress on Saturday, it will bode well for his chances of getting regular playing time this season.

Manuel Akanji only returned to training last week. But with no other senior centre-backs available, he slots straight into the starting XI. The Swiss international will be hoping to get back to full fitness quickly, with games against Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich coming up soon.

U-23s defender Antonios Papadopoulos is rewarded for his solid performances during pre-season with a start in the Pokal opener. The young defender impressed Marco Rose with his no-nonsense defending, and he will now be aiming to stake a claim for a place in the first-team squad this season. Nico Schulz will start at left-back in Raphael Guerreiro’s absence.
