Marcel Schmelzer

Some may regard Schmelzer as the captain. Others may regard him as the man who got Thomas Tuchel sacked. However, this is an article evaluating the performances, not the press conference issues.

Schmelzer is a club veteran who bleeds yellow and black and is a player that has shown his loyalty over the years through strong performances. This season, like the other fullbacks on the roster, Schmelzer had to deal with being played in two roles. It appeared many times this season that Schmelzer just simply was not fast enough to handle both the offensive and defensive responsibilities.

With Raphael Guerreiro bursting through the ranks and looking better than Schmelzer, the era of Schmelzer frequently starting may be coming to a quick end and a new man may be wearing the captain’s armband next season.
