Who Were Dortmund’s Top 7 Players From 2016-17?
By Mark Sendon
5- Julian Weigl: 43 games, 1 goal, 90% pass completion.
Arguably Dortmund’s most important chess piece, Julian Weigl comes in at #5 on our list. He may not be the flashiest player on the field, but whenever he steps on a football pitch, Weigl works wonders.
The kid from Bad Aibling turned in another stellar season even managing to score a wonder goal vs. Sporting CP in the Champions League, a rare sight for the defensive midfielder. Weigl is the epitome of a modern day defensive midfielder. The German international’s outstanding defensive abilities and instincts make him vital in every matchday’s starting eleven. His intelligence when playing from the back kept BVB going throughout the whole campaign. With a passing range similar to Xabi Alonso’s, Weigl can kick start Dortmund’s attack from anywhere on the field.
Dortmund will be without their midfield maestro for the start of next season, as a fractured ankle he picked up vs. Werder Bremen takes its toll.
