Who Were Dortmund’s Top 7 Players From 2016-17?
By Mark Sendon
2- Sokratis Papastathopoulos: 41 games, 3 goals, 89% pass completion.
The penultimate player on our list is the model of consistency in this Dortmund squad. Mats Hummels’ cowardly departure left a gaping hole in Dortmund’s defense. Marc Bartra came in and thrived in the second half of the year, but the stand out all season was Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
What else could you expect from “Papa” at this point? In every single game, he imposed his Spartan strength on opposing attackers leaving them for dead. Countless attempts to beat the Greek international one-on-one were met with a stern shoulder to the body and a quick dispossession. It is interesting to think where Dortmund would be without Sokratis. In a season where injuries plagued the backline, Papa consistently marshaled the defense making it his own.
He also took over the distributing responsibilities left by Hummels and did it well. 90% passing completion on the season along with three goals served Sokratis well, considering many label him as a one-way player.
Season Grade: A+
