Neven Subotic

The Serbian international spent almost a decade with The Black and Yellows. Originally signed from FSV Mainz at the age of 19 when Jurgen Klopp started as head coach for Borussia Dortmund (Also leaving Mainz). At the time he was brought over, Subotic had only featured in the 2nd Bundesliga. There was no sure way of telling if the centre back was a good signing in 2008, until he started playing.

Taking his chance in full stride, Subotic locked in a starting spot and played in all 38 games Borussia Dortmund in his debut season.  His impressive performances turned heads around the Bundesliga as his stock started to rise. He won back to back Bundesliga titles with the club, forming one of the best center-back partnerships at the time with Mats Hummels in the heart of defense.

Over the course of his time with Der BVB, the centre back ended up playing 263 games, scoring 18 goals and providing 5 assists.

His transfer cost Borussia Dortmund close to 4.5 million euros, making him the most expensive player brought in that season. Considering the CV he built while at the Westfalenstadion, it was obviously money will spent. Subotic will play against Borussia Dortmund this year, as he signed with Union Berlin from AS Saint-Etienne earlier this summer.
