Takeaways from Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 win over Zenit Saint Petersburg

Consistent winning when leading
After 2019 was filled with blown leads that held back Borussia Dortmund’s title charge in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 season, they been much better at closing out matches in 2020. After closing out the game against Zenit, the Black and Yellows have now won all 19 of their matches in 2020 in which they scored the first goal of the game. Six of those results have come in this season.
They may have only had to defend their lead for a short time today, but they still showed their ability to grind out results. They limited Zenit from getting any big late chances to get into the game, and capitalised on their opportunity to put the game out of sight in stoppage time.
It is a great sign of development and consistency for the side. In the 18/19 season, they dropped 11 points in games when they scored the first goal, and in 19/20 they dropped seven.
As is the case with their home form, it is something Borussia Dortmund will need to carry on if they are to make a run at winning the Bundesliga this season.
