Last time we saw Jadon Sancho in the UEFA Champions League, he was the star of the show as Borussia Dortmund beat Zenit 2-0. He scored the game winning penalty and was unlucky not leave the match with an assist or two.

He was rested during Borussia Dortmund’s trip to Belgium for the reverse fixture. In his return to the team on Tuesday, Sancho starred once again. The Englishman picked up an early assist as he found Haaland through on goal. The pass was disguised and perfectly weighted for the striker. His eager run into the box after the pass afforded Haaland more space and less defenders to work with. With Sancho bursting into the box, the defenders could not fully commit to blocking Haaland’s shot with the option to pass available.

With the last kick of the first half, Sancho then doubled Borussia Dortmund’s lead with a great free kick from the edge of the box. It isn’t always easy to get the ball over the wall and back down again with free-kicks right near the box. But Sancho struck his shot perfectly and found the top corner, leaving Simon Mignolet with no chance.

To go with his goal and assist, he added four key passes and two take-ons. He was heavily involved all over the pitch, finishing with the second most touches and third most passes, with 86 touches and 66 passes. In addition, Sancho also helped out defensively on a number of occasions. That is something Lucien Favre will certainly have been pleased to see.

Sancho’s league form has not matched his Champions League form yet this season. Hopefully another strong European display can help kickstart him back into the same form that saw him finish last season with 20 goals and 20 assists.
