Gio Reyna impresses despite Dortmund debacle

It will undoubtedly be hard for Borussia Dortmund fans to take much of a silver lining out of the game against Stuttgart, but Gio Reyna’s performance going forward is still something to get excited about. The 18 year old shone up top for the Black and Yellows, scoring an outrageous goal in the first half to level the score.

A very well weighted, over the top pass from Raphael Guerreiro saw the young forward take the ball down with a scintillating first touch and then send it into the bottom right hand corner in style. While this was unfortunately not the spark it should’ve been to kick Borussia Dortmund back into high gear, it is a sign that the youngster is continuing to develop well and trying to contribute every time he is on the pitch. His performances can’t be expected to be perfect, but moments like these show just how much his has grown, and at a very rapid rate at that.

That being said, Reyna did have a sub par defensive contribution, as did most of Dortmund’s attackers as the game went on. It is important for young attackers to learn very quickly that defensive duties are just as important, unless you’re Lionel Messi. And Reyna will have to up this contribution should he and Dortmund look to try and succeed in at least some of the seasonal goals in the coming months.
