The Attack

Borussia Dortmund scored a notable 75 league goals last season and finished in third place, one point behind RB Leipzig, who they also beat in the final of the DFB-Pokal in May. The unrivalled leader in attack is Erling Haaland whose 41 goals in 41 matches make him one of the most desirable forwards in world football. Despite interest from other clubs, the Norwegian international will stay at the club this season.

Borussia Dortmund’s title chances will be greatly enhanced by Haaland staying on. He has proven himself to be one of the most versatile and powerful strikers in world football. He has made an incredible start to the season, and will be aiming to compete for the Golden Boot.

Borussia Dortmund have long been known for their highly attractive attacking football. And in the past season they excelled in tidy one-two touch combinations in the final third, where Haaland has demonstrated an almost irreplaceable killer instinct in the mould of a classic number nine finisher.

However, BVB have a number of players who can find the back of the net. And another player tasked with scoring goals will be Donyell Malen. The Netherlands international joined BVB in a €30 million plus bonuses deal from PSV Eindhoven and brings an additional option in attack. Marco Rose now has the option to create a two-man strike force with Erling Haaland and Donyell Malen this season. Malen registered an impressive 79 goal contributions (55 strikes and 24 assists) over his time with PSV Eindhoven.

Youssoufa Moukoko is a further option in the attack. The 16-year-old became the Bundesliga’s youngest ever goalscorer in December with his goal against Union Berlin. He is one of Germany’s most highly talented strikers and can be regarded as a long-term attacking option for Borussia Dortmund. He will be aiming to take another step forward in his development this season.
