Over the last year, Dortmund hasn’t exactly lived up to expectations.

So far this season, Dortmund haven’t challenged Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title (currently sit fourteen points back in third with four games left.) Furthermore, after winning their Champions League group, which featured defending champions Real Madrid, Dortmund failed to advanced past the quarterfinals.

For the Champions League failure, Dortmund deserves grace despite not accomplishing pre-season goals. After going through a bombing incident and losing their starting centre-back, it is understandable that Dortmund performed poorly against Monaco.

However, Dortmund’s departure did shed light on the most frustrating thing about being a Dortmund supporter.

Dortmund finds a way to beat themselves.

In the two legs against Monaco, Dortmund conceded six goals. What did all six of those goals have in common? A Dortmund error was involved in all six of Monaco’s goals.

Whether it is a bad pass, losing possession in the defensive third, or a goalkeeping mistake, Dortmund finds a way to keep their opponent in the game. Of course, errors are going to happen every once in a while. Regardless, Dortmund proves that narrative to be an understatement as they consistently commit errors to make game’s more challenging for themselves.

In today’s match against Borussia Mönchengladbach, both Borussia goals were off of Dortmund errors. The first, a terrible giveaway in the defensive third by Mikel Merino. The second, an own goal by Marcel Schmelzer.

Dortmund was able to win the match against Mönchengladbach but only by a goal, as a late header by Raphaël Guerreiro saved three points for Dortmund. Hypothetically speaking, if Dortmund didn’t make those two errors, they would have won with a comfortable 3-0 scoreline.

The errors by Dortmund add difficulty to matches that don’t need to be there. If Dortmund could play at a high level without committing mistakes, we could see Dortmund battling Bayern for first in the Bundesliga, as many points have been squandered this year due to significant Dortmund errors.

Why is This The Most Frustrating Thing

Of course, it is frustrating when Bayern Munich happens to buy one of our players (Lewandowski, Götze, Hummels) or when one of our stars gets injured (Reus, Bartra, Sahin.) But to those points, Dortmund always finds a way to rebuild with new stars (Pulisic, Dembélé, Weigl.)

Therefore, blowing leads and losing games due to dumb errors takes the cake.

If there is any doubt in your mind that this doesn’t take the cake, then please remember how you felt when Dortmund made those crucial errors during the Champions League or any other game this season. Think about those moments and let the frustration sink in.

The errors, every game, drive every Dortmund fan insane.
