DFB Pokal Semi Final: Dortmund Comeback To Stun Bayern
Dortmund 3 – 2 Bayern Munich (FT)
Borussia Dortmund are leaving Munich victorious, and en route to the DFB Cup Final in Berlin. They won their match against Bayern Munich by a score of 3:2, in what was an extremely thrilling contest.
The first real chance of the game fell to Aubameyang, who was unable to convert a square ball from Guerreiro, firing a scuffed shot just wide. It was an uncharacteristic miss for the Gabonese forward, as those kind of chances are his bread and butter.
Dortmund struck first to jump out to a 1:0 lead in the 19th minute, after a bad back pass by Javi Martinez. Guerreiro’s initial chance was saved but after hitting the post it fell to Marco Reus, who had no trouble finishing the simple chance. Lahm almost was able to prevent the goal with a last second tackle, but Reus was too quick to the mark.
Erik Durm came on after halftime for Gonzalo Castro in a tactical substitution.
Bayern looked still looked threatening at the start of the second half, testing Bürki and the Dortmund defense often.
The former Dortmund captain and goal scorer Hummels was substituted off in the 61st minute, with Boateng entering the match.
Sven Bender made a huge save for the Black and Yellows, as he stepped into an open goal and cleared Robben’s shot out of the air, sending the ball into the post and ultimately to safety. It was a huge play from Bender to keep Dortmund’s hopes alive, easily the most important play in the match.
Dembélé crossed in a lovely ball to the back post that Aubameyang headed home in the 69th minute to bring BVB level. He had not been having the best of matches up to this point, but within an instant, Dembélé was able to have an impact on the match. Aubameyang made no mistake with this chance, finding the back of the net with ease.
Dembélé had a bit more magic to provide in the 74th minute. He blasted in a wonderful goal to give Dortmund a 3:2 lead. It was an incredible shot that went in after striking the underside of the post. The Dortmund bench went crazy as they took the lead.
Xabi Alonso had a big shout in the 78th minute after he claimed that Dembele fouled him, but he was booked in the end for simulation, with the referee not being fooled.
Bayern were unrelenting for the remainder of the match, throwing everything they had forward. Muller came on for Alonso in the late stages, but was unable to provide the spark that Bayern needed to equalize.
Roman Bürki stood on his head the entire match, making save after save. He was especially good in the late stages of the match.
Dortmund were able to hold out for 5 minutes of stoppage time, and emerge as the winners.
