2. Martin Schmidt

Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel both left Mainz to manage Borussia Dortmund. In saying that, another option is 1. FSV Mainz 05 manager Martin Schmidt.

The 50-year-old Swiss native has significant experience developing players. For example, Schmidt helped develop 2014 World Cup winner and Borussia Dortmund defender Erik Durm. His reliance on youth shows as he is in charge of the third youngest squad in the Bundesliga, which would be a promising fit for the young players of Dortmund.

Another positive is the fact that, like Klopp and Tuchel, he embraces the hard working “gengenpress” system, which means the Dortmund squad should be well adapted and will not need to transition to a new system for a new manager.
