The theme of Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga downfall this season was the lack of quality in defense. Countless matches slipped away from Thomas Tuchel’s men, and it wasn’t due to the lack of scoring. Turkish international Omer Toprak’s arrival signifies an attempt to sure things up at the back but is he enough to solve Borussia’s problems?

A mainstay in Dortmund’s defense over the years, club icon Łukasz Piszczek, unfortunately, is on the wrong side of 30 and is starting to show his age. Tuchel made this clear by deploying “Piszu” as the right center back in a three-man defense numerous times throughout the season. Felix Passlack is considered the heir to Piszczek’s right back throne, but some may not think he is ready to assume such a vital role for BVB. Enter Nelsinho, better known as Nelson Semedo.

The 23-year-old tortured Liga NOS this season at Benfica and Dortmund saw up close in the UEFA Champions League why he has become one of Europe’s most coveted prospects. On the defensive side of the ball, Semedo’s intelligence is essential.

Always knowing when to make the right tackle is a talent few possess and would come in handy especially when defending the counter attack, easily Dortmund’s biggest weakness.

The Portuguese international racked up six assists down the right side of the pitch this season posing a constant threat to opposing left backs. Yes, Piszczek contributes a couple of goals every season, but it would not be wise to keep expecting that sort of production from the soon to be 32-year-old.

With Barcelona reportedly heavily interested, Semedo’s 14,00 Mill. € valued price tag per Transfermarkt could increase in the coming weeks if Michael Zorc and company don’t act quickly. A pacey, intelligent wing back who is more than comfortable on the ball, Nelsinho fits the mold of what Borussia Dortmund need in their ranks.
