There is an old saying that reads, “save the best for last.” Today’s match against Werder Bremen certainly lived up to that saying.

With a Champions League group stage spot up for grab’s, Dortmund entered into today’s game needing a win after drawing last week against FC Augsburg. Instead of trying to summarize what was occurring at Signal Iduna Park today in a sentence, just read the match recap.

Match Recap

Instead of making life easy for themselves, Dortmund went on and shot themselves in the foot. In the 7th minute, Austrian-international Zlatko Junuzović struck a ball just over the goal-line to award visiting Werder Bremen a one goal lead.

Junuzović’s was nothing short of a wake-up call for Dortmund. After initially being a goal adrift, Dortmund began to turn up the offensive pressure.

After creating multiple chances and have quite a few near misses, Dortmund finally found the back of the net. In the 32nd minute, Marco Reus broke free from the Werder Bremen backline and calmly got Dortmund back even.

The first half goal-scoring was not over as in the 42nd minute, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reminded Dortmund fans of what they could be missing next season.

After an incredible chip from Ousmane Dembélé, Aubameyang began rotating his body towards the ball. After sizing up where he was on the field, the Gabon-international reached up and scissor-kicked (kind of) to put Dortmund up by a pair heading into halftime.

With fans spirits high and a third place spot looking probable (Hoffenheim were drawing with Augsburg at halftime,) Dortmund took out a page out of the old book.

Raising everyone’s blood pressure.

Not even sixty seconds after the second half kick-off, Bayern let Werder Bremen score off of a fantastic counter-attack.

Despite allowing Werder Bremen to tie the match, Dortmund was still in third place as Hoffenheim were still drawing with FC Augsburg.

However, that didn’t last long.

In the 68th minute, German-international, before getting kicked off the team for clubbing too much, Max Kruse put the visitors ahead on yet another delightful counter-attack.

In what was a rare occurrence, Dortmund fans were silent. Now, it was up to Thomas Tuchel’s side to try and earn a result.

Eight minutes following the Kruse goal, Reus was taken down in the Werder Bremen penalty box. With no hesitation, Reus smashed a rocket into the top corner to put Dortmund back level with the visitors.

Following the Reus penalty, Dortmund kept continuing to put pressure on the Werder Bremen net. Right before stoppage time began, Dortmund earned yet another penalty.

Instead of Reus netting his hat-trick, Aubameyang stepped up and calmly put Dortmund back in front, thus completing their second comeback of the match.

It wasn’t pretty at times, but Dortmund came back from behind twice to secure a Champions League Group Stage spot.

Hopefully, we don’t have to deal with the same cardiac attacks next year.
