Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid: UCL Player Ratings, tough luck for BVB
Roman Bürki (8/10)
Bürki was phenomenal on the night, making a staggering 7 saves. It’s a shame that the Swiss had to go back home with such a heavy scoreline. Borussia Dortmund’s defence was partly to blame for the number of shots Madrid were giving away.
Łukasz Piszczek (7/10)
Piszczek was one of the better defensive performers of the night having managed to keep the likes of Isco and Bale contained for a majority of the night. Things would have looked very different had Marcelo been on the field. However, the right-back held his own against some serious opposition and deserves props for the same.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos (6/10)
Sokratis had some good moments on the field but struggled against the pace of Bale and Isco. The duo from Madrid got the better of Sokratis. Despite a ridiculous pass completion rate of 94%, the Greek failed to have an impact in the final third. Defensively, however, Sokratis was solid.
Ömer Toprak (5/10)
Toprak did not make a single tackle in the game. The Turk also boasted a 96% pass completion but much of it was useless as he failed to push the ball forward into dangerous positions. Lacklustre from the defender.
Jeremy Toljan (5/10)
Up against the trio of Ronaldo, Modric & Carvajal, the left-back stood no chance and was the poorest defender on the pitch by some margin. The full-back was poor in possession and was rightfully taken off half-way through the game.
Nuri Şahin (7/10)
Şahin was decent for the time he spent on the pitch. He didn’t create much against his former side but the Turk was effective in his role. His substitution was a tactical one and made in order to have greater control of the pitch.
Gonzalo Castro (8/10)
Arguably the best outfield player for Dortmund on the night. Castro was everywhere, making tackles and breaking the rhythm of the opposition play. He made a total of 5 tackles in the game which was one short of the highest in the game (Casemiro, 6).Castro also assisted the only BVB goal of the night with a wonderful ball into the box.
Mario Götze (6/10)
The worst of the midfield trio, the German was ineffective for most of the match and got outplayed by Madrid’s midfielders.
Andriy Yarmolenko (6/10)
Probably Yarmolenko’s first bad performance in the BVB jersey. He did hae a great chance for a header that he squandered in the box. Apart from that, it was clear that the forward has an extreme tendency to favour his left foot which allows the opposition to negate him with ease. Below par for the Ukrainian’s standards.
Maximilian Philipp (6/10)
Philipp has been a revelation for most of the season but it just wasn’t his night. The German was up against one of the best right-backs in the world. It wasn’t a surprise that Philipp barely had an impact in the final third.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (6/10)
Apart from the goal, there was very little to Aubameyang’s game who kept waiting for supply. Aubemayang failed to break Madrid’s offside trap on numerous occasions, rendering him ineffective.
Mahmoud Dahoud (5/10)
A good performance from the German who came on as a substitute. More time would have brought him a better rating but it was obvious to anyone that the amount of control he brought Dortmund back into the game.
Julian Weigl (5/10)
Solid performance from Weigl; should have probably started against Madrid’s possession heavy midfield.
Christian Pulisic (NA)
Captain America was on the field for a small amount of time and despite some positive movement, was not influential in the game.
Team (5/10)
Dortmund was outplayed and despite the wrongly called penalty in the first half (which would have drastically impacted the result), Madrid were the better side. They broke down BVB and exploited the space from the high press.
Peter Bosz (5/10)
Peter Bosz has talent and while he did make the smart move by picking experience over raw talent, his tactics should have been more conservative; Madrid were fairly aggressive and could have been contained better.
