Borussia Dortmund’s All-Time Best XI
By Tushar Bahl
Forward: Manfred Burgsmuller
While he never lifted a major trophy with the club, Manfred Burgsmuller deserves his name on this list because of his exceptional contributions for the club. Burgsmuller joined Borussia Dortmund in 1976 from Bayer Uerdingen. His goal-scoring prowess quickly became apparent and he enjoyed some very productive seasons with the club.
He never scored less than 15 goals in the Bundesliga in a season. Burgsmuller scored 135 goals in just 224 Bundesliga matches during his time with the club, a club record. He also holds the record for most goals in a single match for Dortmund (five goals against Arminia Bielefeld in 1982).
In all, Burgsmuller scored 158 goals in 251 games for Dortmund and he is second in the all-time list. He captained the side during his last four years at the club. Burgsmuller left the Black and Yellows in 1983 to join FC Nurnberg. He retired from football in 1990 at the age of 41. Five years later, Burgsmuller became an NFL player in Europe, playing for the Rhein Fire.
His deadly finishing made him a feared forward all over Europe. He played as a midfielder for most of his Dortmund career which makes his stats even more incredible!
Other notable mentions include Lothar Emmerich, Robert Lewandowski, and Alfred Preissler.
