Borussia Dortmund’s All-Time Best XI
By Tushar Bahl
Centre Back: Jurgen Kohler
Another defender who joined the club from Juventus in the 90s, Jurgen Kohler was a great leader and a beast of a centre back. He won two league titles with the club and also lifted the UEFA Champions League as well as the Intercontinental Cup in 1997.
He racked 243 appearances for the club in seven years before retiring in 2002. Kohler even scored 17 goals which show his great aerial prowess. Kohler was also known for his ability to play the ball from the back, a trend which was started in the late 90s across Europe.
For Germany, Kohler earned 105 caps and won the FIFA World Cup in 1990 and the 1996 Euros. He was named in the UEFA Euro Team of the Tournament for the 1992 Euros where Germany finished runners up. And during Dortmund’s Champions League winning season, Kohler was named the Footballer of the Year in Germany.
After enjoying a successful career in the Black and Yellow shirt, Kohler’s final game ended in disappointment as he was sent off in the 2002 Uefa Cup final against Feyenoord. To make matters worse, Dortmund lost the game 3-2.
But despite that, Kohler will always be remembered as one of the greatest ever defenders to ever play for Borussia Dortmund.
