Borussia Dortmund’s All-Time Best XI
By Tushar Bahl
Centre Back: Mats Hummels
While it would be tempting to not put him here due to his former allegiance with Bayern Munich, his incredible performances over the decade he has spent at BVB make it impossible to leave him out. Hummels was a youth academy product of Bayern Munich. He first joined Dortmund on loan from Bayern in 2008.
An year later, after fully establishing himself in Dortmund’s back-line, Hummels joined on a permanent transfer for a fee of €4 million. Along with Neven Subotic, Hummels made Borussia Dortmund’s defence almost impenetrable at times. In the 2010-11 season, BVB conceded only 22 goals on their way to the league title.
Hummels’ composure on the ball, his passing, intelligence and tackling made him one of the best defenders in the world. He became a leader for the team and was also named club captain in 2014.
While he did join Bayern Munich in 2016, Hummels returned to Borussia Dortmund three years later and has been a rock at the back for the club since.
Hummels is second in the list of most appearances ever for BVB, and has also won two Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokals, two DFL-Supercups with the club. All these plaudits and more easily make Hummels one of the best defenders to have ever played for Borussia Dortmund.
