Leonardo de Deus Santos or Dede joined Borussia Dortmund aged just 20 from Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro in 1998. While his debut ended with him being stretched off, Dede enjoyed 13 amazing years at the Signal Iduna Park.

He won two Bundesliga titles and also reached the UEFA Cup final in 2002 with the club. Dede was a real fan-favorite with the Borussia Dortmund fans, which was evident by the attendance of 81,359 on his testimonial game in 2015.

“My greatest title was being able to play for BVB for so long,” Dede said ahead of his testimonial.

He made 391 appearances for the Black and Yellows and is currently ranked fifth in the all-time appearances list. He was a solid defender and a menace going forward. Sadly his Dortmund career ended with a string of injuries as he was replaced by current club captain Marcel Schmelzer in the line-up.

But Dede proved himself as a cult-hero at the club and his legendary status at Dortmund will never be taken away from him.

Other notable mentions in defense include Jorg Heinrich and Christian Worns, both of who enjoyed successful careers with the club.
