Central Midfield: Matthias Sammer

Often considered to be one of the best ever players to play for Borussia Dortmund, Sammer signed for the club in 1993 from Inter Milan. While he signed as a midfielder, Sammer was often used by manager Ottmar Hitzfield in the role of a sweeper.

It paid dividends as Dortmund won back to back league titles in 1994-95 and 1995-96, with Sammer playing a crucial role. Sammer was named the German Footballer of the Year in both 1995 and 1996.

And in 1996, he became the first Dortmund player to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or award. An year later, he captained the Black and Yellows to Champions League success. He retired an year later after suffering from a serious knee injury.

In 2000, Sammer was named as Borussia Dortmund’s manager. Under him, Der BVB won the league title in 2001-02 and reached the UEFA Cup final as well. He was sacked in 2004 after the team finished sixth in the league.

Matthias Sammer is a true Borussia Dortmund legend. His courage, determination and his will to fight for the shirt make him a true BVB great.
