Central Midfield: Alfred Schmidt

Another one club man, Schmidt was one of the finest players to play for Borussia Dortmund in the 60s. He enjoyed a 12 year career with the club, winning the German first-division title in 1957 and 1963, the DFB Cup in 1965 and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1966.

“Aki” Schmidt was an amazing leader and gave the club some amazing memories during his time with the Black and Yellows. He made a total of 268 appearances and scored 70 goals for Borussia Dortmund.

After his retirement, he worked as a coach and was heavily involved with the club, serving as a fan correspondent. He passed away last year aged 81, following illness. He was a real Borussia Dortmund legend, and his contributions for the club will never be forgotten.

Other notable mentions include Lars Ricken, Alfred Niepieklo and Sebastian Kehl.
