The background of this match is what ranks it special is recent memory. BVB had just completed a domestic double and won DFB-Pokal. Borussia Dortmund had been aiming to strengthen their team with new signings and defend their titles respectively. One player that wasn’t with them at the start of the season was Mario Gotze.
Ahead of the UFEA Champions League final, Mario Gotze was sold to Bayern Munich. Activating his release clause, Gotze was set to play against Dortmund at some point in the future.
When he was subbed on there was very audible displeasure from the crowd. Shots of the crowd showed a lot of emotion, primarily in anger towards the midfielder.
