Weigl’s early season struggles were in part due to Peter Bosz’ use of a back three. Weigl thrives in the role just in front of the back four and at the heart of a 3 man midfield. In Dortmund’s two most recent Bundesliga matches, Weigl played great games. He protected the defence and made the correct reads for passes. His performances throughout the season have not been amazing, but he has been a consistent presence for Dortmund. Weigl’s consistency this season helps his cause, but Dortmund as a whole has been inconsistent all season. The return to a 3-man midfield will help Weigl and hopefully, help him build on his recent performances. He is the engine for this Dortmund team.
