Borussia Dortmund Player Power Rankings February 2018
By Oliver Campo
5) Mario Gotze
It is difficult for a player to mimic the work rate of Mario Gotze. Gotze’s return to prominence in football is a rocky one. Beyond the time he spent injured, he played consistently for Bosz. Stöger has yet to let Gotze complete a full match though. Most likely due to the injury he suffered just before Stöger took over as head coach.
He scored Dortmund’s second goal after coming on from the bench at the weekend. And his two assists for Batshuayi helped Dortmund turn around their first leg against Atalanta. Looks like Gotze is close to getting back to his very best.
4) Omer Toprak
Toprak turned his form around quickly while under Stöger. It is amazing because he performed poorly under Bosz and there was little hope he would make it at BVB. Toprak now fits in nicely in the backline with Sokratis and is trusted to start nearly every game. He has dominated games and has now become almost indispensable for the club. Toprak is not afraid to make a tackle or put his body on the line. If Toprak stays, the next few seasons with him at Dortmund will be interesting.
3) André Schurrle
Schurrle’s return to BVB started in unfavorable circumstances; he was uninspiring to start with. He found himself playing for many teams over the years and most thought he would transfer out during the winter transfer market. But the club did not sanction his transfer after Yarmolenko got injured in training.
Since then, he has scored a match winning goal, provided a superb assist in the league. Last night, he was one of Dortmund’s best players and scored their first goal. It is fair to say that Schurrle is turning things around.
