Akanji’s name on this list is a no-brainer. The Swissman has set the World Cup on fire with his sensational performances and proved that signing him in January was a master-stroke from the club. Not only did it give him enough time to acclimatize with his surroundings after being thrown into the deep end, it also means that he will return from the World Cup for a shortened preseason with little time to prepare and it still wouldn’t matter; he already knows his teammates.

Ömer Toprak is likely to be his substitute and will let Akanji get some much-needed rest. Toprak could begin the season in the XI but Akanji is likely to take over once he is match-fit and raring to go.
