Marcel Schmelzer dropped his captaincy and it was probably warranted after he threw several players and the coach under the bus for poor performances. Schmelzer may have been a great servant of the club but father-time has caught up to him. Guerreiro reignited some much-lost faith in him with this World Cup and is likely to be the first-choice next season.

Toljan could play a few minutes here and there in the role but expect to see Guerreiro as a starter if the club makes no further recruitments in that position.
