Nuri Sahin has a strong case for being a starter but the Turk is aging and doing so at an alarming rate. Sahin’s performances were hit-and-miss for most of last season and if Weigl cannot takeover right now, then he might not be the man for the job.

Julian Weigl will probably be the first choice next season and if he is still shaky, the German could probably be sold to the highest bidder. This season is make-or-break for him and he should take the opportunity and run with it.

Weigl will likely be written off at the start of the season due to his groin injury. Even if he does make it into the XI, chances are he’ll be dropped as the season progresses for performing poorly. However, he should remain first-choice until evidence contradicts that decision.

New signing Axel Witsel is primarily a central midfielder but it should not come as a surprise if the coach uses him as a defensive midfielder in order to incorporate some of the squad’s mainstays like Gotze or Kagawa into the starting line-up. Witsel is capable of playing across the board in midfield and his ability to defend is only going to make things more difficult for the rest.
