Raphael Guerreiro

Guerreiro will have his work cut out for him as there’s a good chance that one of Toljan or Hakimi will replace him as the starter. For better or worse, however, Guerreiro remains BVB’s first-choice left-back and with so many midfielders in the squad, his versatility will be of little use this season. If he cannot find minutes on the left side of the defense, then there’s little chance he will find them anywhere else.

Marcel Schmelzer

Schmelzer lost a lot of goodwill last season, in terms of both performance and leadership. His presence in the locker room may have diminished but he will still remain a key figure that binds the players together. He may not be the charismatic leader that Marco Reus is but he is still a man bred in the Black and Yellow ways and nothing will change that. His minutes, however, may end up being some of the lowest he’s had in the recent years with so many options capable of playing as the left-back.
