Borussia Dortmund: Squad Depth Analysis
Julian Weigl
Weigl was almost guaranteed a spot at the start of the season with Peter Stoeger gone. Lucien Favre, however, has brought in some major names in midfield and the competition is through the roof. Not only will he struggle to find minutes, he’ll have to impress the best he can in order to have another chance.
Axel Witsel
The Belgian powerhouse did not move to Europe to pllay second-fiddle. Witsel will likely be the first choice at the start of the season until the coach can settle on a more balanced and clinical starting XI. Witsel will have plenty of opportunities in midfield as he is more than capable of playing in any of the three slots available. The only thing he needs to do is make the most of every single opportunity.
Nuri Sahin
Sahin is pretty inconsistent and his minutes will be considerably reduced this season unless Julian Weigl suffers form an injury or lack of form, which is still very likely.
Dzenis Burnic
The German midfielder is pretty good when in form but his disciplinary issues will be something to work on over the course of the season. It remains to be seen if he will stay with the club or leave on loan.
