Complete lowdown on Lucien Favre’s backroom staff at Borussia Dortmund

New Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre is set for his competitive debut with the club on Monday. So let us take a look at his supporting cast for the upcoming season.

Lucien Favre’s backroom staff at Borussia Dortmund features a mix of familiar faces and fresh names. Not only the players, but the coaching staff has also had a major reshuffle this summer. Several changes have been made to the staff from last season, however some members have been allowed to stay on. Here, we take a look at the men who make up Lucien Favre’s backroom team ahead of the new season.

Manfred Stefes: Assistant Coach

The 51 year old spent nearly four years with Lucien Favre at Borussia Monchengladbach and has now joined Borussia Dortmund as the co-trainer. Stefes spent most of his playing career at Monchengladbach, before becoming the assistant manager at the club in 2000. He joined MSV Duisberg in 2005, before returning three years later. In 2017, he became Gladbach’s coordinator of talent management, before leaving in December.

Edin Terzic: Assistant Coach

The Croatian returns to Borussia Dortmund after a five year absence, having worked as the assistant manager for Slaven Bilic at Besiktas and West Ham United. Terzic had earlier worked under Hannes Wolf as a scout and assistant coach for various Dortmund youth teams. Terzic is rated very highly by the Borussia Dortmund bosses and will play a crucial role at the club.

Matthias Kleinsteiber: Goalkeeping Coach

After the departure of Wolfgang “Teddy” de Beer, Matthias Kleinsteiber has been named Borussia Dortmund’s new goalkeeping coach. The 40 year old acted as de Beer’s assistant last season but now has taken up a more senior role in the team. Kleinsteiber spent most of his playing career with Borussia Dortmund II, before retiring in 2005. He then became the goalkeeping coach for the club’s U-19 team, before taking the same job with the club’s second team in 2011.

Andreas Beck: Fitness Coach

Beck has been at the club for six years now and is currently the athletic trainer of the first team. He held the same job at FC Nuremberg, before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2012. He looks after the players’ strength, conditioning and rehabilitation.

Florian Wangler: Fitness Coach

Wangler has already been with the club for ten years now. He joined the club in 2008, right after graduating with a degree in sports science. The Hamburg native is responsible for fitness and athleticism and often works with players just returning from injuries.

Dr. Anke Steffen: Fitness Coach

Steffen has been at the club since 2013 and moved through the ranks to become the rehab coach for the first team in 2017. She specializes in injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Kai-Norman Schulz: Chief Analyst

Schulz joined Borussia Dortmund at the start of the year as the video analyst. He arrived from Austria Vienna, where he was an important part of Thorsten Fink’s staff. His role is to process, evaluate and archive the data collected at Dortmund. The data can be used to improve players and identify opposition weaknesses.

In addition to the backroom staff, Borussia Dortmund have some key people in management and organisation positions. Sebastian Kehl and Matthias Sammer both arrived at the start of the season. Kehl works as the head of the first team football and will act as the link between the players and the board. While Sammer is Borussia Dortmund’s external advisor.
