What would constitute a successful season for Borussia Dortmund?
Winning the Bundesliga title would obviously constitute a successful season for Borussia Dortmund. There is a sense of uncertainty surrounding Bayern Munich at the moment, and Dortmund must take advantage of it. Bayern have not exactly reinforced their team, and the core of their team is ageing as it is.
Borussia Dortmund must shoot for the title and give it a real go. The squad is missing a title winning striker, but if the attack works as a unit the striker hole can be patched up. Another season of languishing in third or fourth will further push Dortmund towards unwanted mediocrity.
Dortmund’s most important signing?
Axel Witsel left China to return to the highest levels of European soccer this summer. Witsel was once a player consistently linked with Europe’s Elite, and earning the big bucks in China, he made his move to Borussia Dortmund. Witsel has the potential to be Dortmund’s midfield engine, and along with his attacking quality he can pull the strings for Dortmund by being the midfield enforcer. Witsel is the key to Dortmund’s season, and Witsel playing at his expected level can push Dortmund to champions status. He is that good!
Dortmund’s most important player?
Maximilian Philipp is Borussia Dortmund’s most important player for the upcoming season. Philipp has been tasked with being Dortmund’s striker, and he needs to replace Michy Batshuayi’s production. Philipp needs to adapt to a position that is not his natural position. Philipp thrives in a role behind a true number nine, but with the lack of a natural striker, he will be asked to lead the line.
Philipp has the quality to be a great attacking player, but Dortmund’s lack of strikers can lead to overextending Philipp. Philipp and Marco Reus will need to lead a fluid Dortmund attack, but Philipp must be the focal point. A breakout season for the 24 year old and a high goal scoring total will be crucial for Dortmund this season. If he can have a standout season, then that title dream may not look so far fetched.
