Borussia Dortmund II roster news part 1
By Alex Orillac
Borussia Dortmund youth squads have seen a couple of interesting moves occurring during this past summer transfer window. Following next, we will take a look at some players that have just left Dortmund for other clubs.
David Sauerland
The 21-year-old German defender joined Dortmund back in 2014 joining Der BVB’s U-17 side. Sauerland played in over 130 games for Dortmund’s youth teams but never really managed to break into the senior team. He was a habitual starter for the youth teams and if it wasn’t for the fierce competition at the right back spot he would have made it.
The transfer of Jeremy Toljan last season and the arrival of Achraf Hakimi on loan meant that Sauerland was no longer needed at Dortmund. This summer Sauerland received an offer to play with the third-tier side Eintracht Braunschweig who got relegated last season. Sauerland has played in their last 4 games and even recorded an assist against Hertha BSC in their DFB Pokal loss.
Patrick Mainka
Patrick Mainka joined Borussia Dortmund II last season coming from Werder Bremen II. He served as Dortmund II’s captain last season and in his 2 years with the team, he played over 80 games and managed to score 9 goals and 2 assists. Another habitual starter, Mainka could have been set to make it to the senior team, but once again the competition was rough for him.
Mainka left Dortmund this summer after the signing of center back Abdou Diallo in favor of joining Bundesliga 2 side Fc Heidenheim. The German side struggled massively in division 2 and managed to avoid relegation in the last matchday. Mainka is coming to reinforce their defense that conceded 56 goals last season, the most in Bundesliga 2. If it all goes well for the young German, he could end up playing in the first division next year. Mainka has already played in 3 games for Heidenheim including in their DFB Pokal win over Jeddeloh.
Argyris Kampetsis
The Greek youngster Argyris Kampetsis never really managed to break into Dortmund II’s starting XI. Kampetsis is known for scoring a hat trick against Cypriot side APOEL in the UEFA U-19 Champions League. Apart from that he just could not find the back of the net for the remainder of the season yet he still played in 14 more games coming from the bench. Kampetsis still has plenty to prove but his days in Dortmund were counted.
This summer, Argyris went back to his home country of Greece and has joined one of Greece’s biggest teams Panathinaikos. Considering that there is a lack of proven strikers over there, Kampetsis could really make it into the starting XI. Panathinaikos is known for exporting young talent out of Greece and surely the young 19-year-old will make a move outside if given the opportunity.
